Summer Learning Challenge

Building a Better Community: June 10, 2017 through August 4, 2017

Read, have fun, and win! The Carson City Library’s Summer Learning Challenge encourages and rewards readers of all ages while also providing fun educational programs and special events!

Register:

Starting June 10th, register by clicking on Register/Sign In Here or go in person to the Carson City Library Youth Desk. Come to our Summer Learning Kickoff Party on June 10th from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM to register and receive program information.

Read:

Ages 0-5- Build early reading and language skills with your child by completing fun, developmental activities.  Complete a Game Card to earn a board book and entry into our Grand Prize Raffle!

Ages 6-11- Develop early language skills with your child by reading or listening to books.  Read a total of 30 hours to enter our Grand Prize Raffle and earn special prizes along the way!

Ages 12-18- Be prepared to succeed by reading and discussing literature.  Read a total of 60 hours to enter our Grand Prize Raffle and earn special prizes along the way!

Ages 18 and Up- Experience the joy of reading.  Read a total of 60 hours to enter our Grand Prize Raffle and earn special prizes along the way!

Participate in events:

Receive additional Grand Prize Raffle entries for every 5 events attended.  Some events require pre-registration to assist in preparation and planning. To register for an event, visit our calendar by clicking here.  Find the program that you are interested in and click the program title. If registration is required, complete the appropriate fields.

Earn Prizes:

Join us on Saturday, August 5th from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM for the End of Summer Learning Party to wrap up the Summer Learning Challenge, where you can finish logging your hours and filling out raffle entries for the Grand Prize Raffle.

Register, Read, Participate

Register

  • Click “Register/Sign In Here”.

    • “Register an Individual or Family”- Use this option if you did not participate in the Summer Learning Challenge last year.

    • “Register a Class or Group”- Use this option to register a group of people, such as Parks & Rec, Boys & Girls Club of Western NV, etc.

    • “Already Registered on this site?” - “Sign In Here”- Use this if you participated in the Summer Learning Challenge last year. *If you forgot your password, there will be an option to reset it on the login page.*

  • You will receive a Summer Learning Challenge Guide and Reading Log or Game Card for your age level. You will need to come into the library and visit the youth desk to receive these materials if you register offsite.

Read

  • Log your reading on your Reading Log.

  • Enter your hours into your Summer Learning Challenge account to receive your next log.

    • Click the box that reads “Register/Sign In Here”.

    • Enter your username and password to log in.

    • Click on the pencil/paper icon to log your reading.    

    • Visit the library to help log your hours and receive your next log and an entry into the Grand Prize Raffle.

  • Earn additional ticket entries into the Grand Prize Raffle by completing Book Review Bookmarks. Pick up a Book Review Bookmark at the Youth Desk, complete it, turn it into staff, and receive another entry into our Grand Prize Raffle.

Participate in Events

  • Attend Summer Learning Challenge events:

    • Regular programs such as Story Times, Computer Classes, Lego Club, etc. do not count as Summer Learning Challenge events.

    • All Summer Learning Challenge events are noted in blue on our program calendar.

  • For each Summer Learning Challenge event attended, you will receive a sticker to put on your Summer Learning Challenge Event Attendance Log, which is located in the Summer Learning Challenge Guide.

  • After you attend 5 Summer Learning Challenge events and receive 5 stickers, you will earn a ticket for our Grand Prize Raffle during our End of Summer Learning Party on August 5th from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

  • Library staff will initial the Summer Learning Challenge Event Attendance Log when a you earn a Grand Prize Raffle entry.

  • Grand Prizes not picked up within two week of our Grand Prize Raffle on August 5th will be forfeited.

How It Works

Information on the Summer Learning Challenge by age range follows:

Ages 0-5- Complete a Game Card to earn a board book and entry into our Grand Prize Raffle during our End of Summer Learning Party on August 5th from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
  • There will be 3 Game Cards that correspond with the child’s age range:

    • Newborn - 18 Months

    • 18 Months - 3 Years

    • 3 Years - 5 Years

  • You will need to complete each “activity square” on your Game Card between June 10th and August 4th.

  • When you complete 5 activity squares on your Game Card, you will earn a special rhyme card, and a fun take-home activity.

  • Once you collect all 5 rhyme cards, you will receive a board book to keep and an entry into our Grand Prize Raffle during our End of Summer Learning Party on August 5th from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

  • After you complete your Game Card, you can continue participating to earn additional rhyme cards and entries into our Grand Prize Raffle on August 5th; however, additional completed Game Cards will not earn another board book.

Ages 6-11- Develop early language skills with your child by reading or listening to books.  Read a total of 30 hours to enter our Grand Prize Raffle during our End of Summer Learning Party on August 5th from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM and earn special prizes along the way!
  • You will need to complete a total of 3 Reading Logs, worth 10 hours each, between June 10th and August 4th.

    • Reading hours will be recorded in 30 minute increments.

  • When you read for 30 minutes, you will write the title of the book you read and color in the Lego brick next to it.

  • Once a you complete a Reading Log, a fun take-home activity, and an entry into our Grand Prize Raffle on August 5th during our End of Summer Learning Party from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

  • After you complete your first 3 Reading Logs, you can continue to log you reading hours to earn additional entries into our Grand Prize Raffle on August 5th; however, additional completed Reading Logs will not earn additional fun take-home activities.

All Ages- Book Review Bookmark
  • Earn additional ticket entries into the Grand Prize Raffle by completing book reviews. Pick up a Book Review Bookmark at the Youth Desk, complete it, turn it into staff, and receive another entry into our Grand Prize Raffle on August 5th during our End of Summer Learning Party from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Make sure that they are submitted into the appropriate age group.

  • Completed Book Review Bookmarks are placed in the basket at Youth Desk.

  • Children are allowed to dictate to parents/caregivers (for younger ages).

  • Participants can only complete one review per book, but the number of book reviews submitted is unlimited.


If You Lose Your Game Card or Reading Log:
  • You are required to register on Beanstack to participate in the SLC to include logging your hours. You will receive a game card or log once you are registered. After you complete one, you will need to log your hours to receive the next level. We encourage participants to log their hours regularly in the event that they lose a game card or reading log. This ensures that less information is lost. If you lose your card or log, library staff will support you by giving you a new game card or reading log based on what has been earned and logged in Beanstack.
