Guidelines for the Use of the Internet on Library Computers
Use of the Internet on library computers will be on a reservation basis. No fee for use will be charged.
When all computers are in use, patrons sign in at a Reservation Kiosk. When computers are available, patrons can sign in directly to one that is vacant and not reserved. Patrons are limited to two (2) sessions per day.
Patrons may choose to use:
- Internet Stations that provide one (1) hour of use per session
- Internet Express Stations that provide fifteen (15) minutes of use per session
- Word Processing computers that provide three (3) hours of use per session
Printing
Print jobs are released from the Print Release Station. Black and white prints are $0.10. Color prints are $0.25. Patrons may not use their own paper. Printers may not be used for other purposes or attached to other computers (e.g. laptops). Printing quality cannot be guaranteed.
Library Internet Rules
The computing resources offered by Carson City Library are to be used in accordance with principles of respect for other users of the system and the equipment.
Though the Library makes every effort to maintain a secure network through use of virus protection and firewalls, it cannot guarantee the privacy of transmitted personal information such as credit card and Social Security numbers.
The Internet connection and printing services may be periodically or temporarily unavailable due to technical difficulties.
The Library assumes no responsibility for damage, theft, or loss of any kind to a user's personal equipment, software, or data files.
Library staff will help with basic questions and will make available books, manuals and other useful reference sources. Because of library scheduling, Internet-trained staff may not always be available for assistance.
Certain behavior is unacceptable on the Library’s Internet computers. Examples of unacceptable behavior include, but are not limited to:
- conducting illegal activity, accessing illegal materials or exhibiting materials which are considered obscene as defined in 18 U.S.C. § 1460, pornographic as defined in 18 U.S.C. § 2256, or harmful to minors as defined in the Children’s Internet Protection Act Pub. L. 106-554.
- tampering with Library computer hardware or software
- sending files or messages that the law would consider obscene, illegal, or threatening another person or group of people.
- invading another person's privacy. This includes stealing passwords, signing on using another person's identity, or pretending that you are someone else on the Internet.
- breaking into computer security. This includes trying to find out or use a Library password.
- loading software onto the computer.
- use of computers for illegal activity
The library cooperates fully with law enforcement authorities wishing to prosecute criminals for illegal activity.
